Don Covay & Friends - Adlib
Soul/R&B legend Don Covay has written hits for The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin,
Huey Lewis & The News, Dave Edmunds, Bonnie Raitt, and just about everybody else. Don
Covay & Friends is Dons first recorded work in 25 years, and will be
released this fall.
Don Covay & Friends features primarily new compositions written by Don
this year, as well as several of his best-known songs. Don is helped out by some very
talented friends who were eager to show their gratitude: Paul Rodgers, Wilson Pickett,
Huey Lewis, Dan Penn, Frederick Knight, Syl Johnson, Otis Clay, Ann Peebles, and Paul
The band on the album is led by producer Jon Tiven (guitar/organ), and features his
wife Sally Tiven (bass), Anton Fig (drums), Paul Shaffer (piano), and guest appearances by
Lee Konitz (saxophone), Kim Simmonds (boogie guitar), Mason Casey (harmonica), and Robert
Butch Johnson (tremelo guitar). In addition, Ronnie Wood has drawn two new
portraits of Don for the album art.
Don had a major stroke in 1992 and has been slowly building his way back to the making
of this record. Don is my idol and a good friend, and its been a great
pleasure to see him able to write and sing again, explains Tiven, who produced
Wilson Picketts comeback album, Its Harder Now, which recently took
home three W.C. Handy.

HEAVY LOAD - THE STORY OF FREE
It's finally about to happen - The first book on Free.
With all the editing now almost complete we are ready to move into the next stage of
our long project. We are finally ready to start taking orders. Heavy Load will be offered
in a 275 - 300 page hardback edition. The book will be printed on a glossy heavy gauge
paper stock and fully stitched into the binding to provide a long life. The cover is heavy
card and sealed with an almost leather feel protective coat onto which the cover art is
printed. The quality of materials and printing is superb and this really will be a
worthwhile addition of any music fans library.
The page count isn't yet finalised as we still have a little work to do but the book
includes around 430 photographs, many previously unpublished, and masses of memorabilia.
We have a forward written by Chris Blackwell and an introduction by Al Kooper. Initial
chapters include many family photographs from band members own personal archives, and
those from the private collection of David Kossoff. The text runs the complete pre-history
of the personnel, the complete history of Free, and the full history up to the death of
Paul Kossoff. This spans 23 chapters packed with pictures and quotes.
Following this there is a section of quotes from people remembering Koss, and Free -
then an epilogue bringing many of the personal historys of the books many characters up to
date. There is then a comprehensive ten page gig and studio itinerary along with a
discography, information on the FAS and the authors of Heavy Load.

This week Allan welcomes Rock icon Paul Rodgers. As one of Rock n Rolls most
distinctive vocalists, many musicians and critics dubbed him The Voice. Rogers first
crashed on the international music scene with his rock anthem ALL RIGHT NOW with FREE.
Later, he went on to form BAD COMPANY and had dozens of hits including CANT GET ENOUGH,
FEEL LIKE MAKING LOVE, SHOOTING STAR, BAD COMPANY and RUNNING WITH THE BACK. Later he
formed THE FIRM with Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, which generated the radio hits such as
RADIOACTIVE, and SATIFACTION GUARANTEED. His brand new solo release is called ELECTRIC.
Paul Rogers fans need to call in early (starting at 10PM Eastern). Use 800-762-5825.
Speaking of Rock icons, also joining Allan this week, guitar legend Peter Frampton.

including I DONT NEED NO DOCTOR, CMON EVERYBODY and 30 DAYS IN THE HOLE. Then later on his

THE STORY OF FREE
With the possibility that we might "self publish" the first ever book about
Free (by David Clayton & Todd Smith) we'd like to take a reading on how many of you
would like to buy a copy/copies. We intend to make the price point around GBP19.99 (that's
British Pounds and is approx. US$32), which is the same as Cherry Red or Northdown
Publishing would have charged but with complete control over the finished item we intend
to make this something really special and are looking over everything from heavy quality
paper stock to photo reproduction. All books can be signed by us if you wish, we'll sort
all that stuff out later and we hope to reward those who advance order in some way. A
signed and numbered advance order edition maybe, or something similar.
To pre-order simply state how many books you'd like and e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
You need only e-mail once. A reply will be forwarded with full details and exact price
(including post & packaging) once details are confirmed. You won't hear from us until
then. Publication is likely to be around April/May. If you've already sent an SAE via the
Free Appreciation Society please do not respond via e-mail. We only need you to place an
order by one method or the other.

THE ULTIMATE FREE BOX SET
Note: GBP refers to British Pounds Sterling.
No more dreaming about it. No more waiting for it. The Free box set is finally here, 5
CDs and a 60 page colour booklet packed into a long box with slipcase. Its taken two years
to complete and its finally released on May8th. There shouldnt be any more delays (Fingers
While Island have taken an eternity to sort out its pricing policy on the set, I can
now offer it through the FAS at the price of GBP 45.00 + GBP 3.00 for First Class postage
& packing. I've already seen it advertised at GBP 54.99 + P&P (I've also seen it
for GBP 60!!!) so this price should save you some money, even if not as much as I'd hoped.
All copies will be sent out by first class mail using Recorded Delivery and you can order
as many copies as you like, so tell your friends to order via the FAS, too. I was hoping
to get the set VAT free but sadly that's not the case, sorry. This is the best deal I can
get and boy, have I tried to beat that price down. Even as the guy who put the set
together this is the best I can do for you all.
- For Europe the price is GBP 45.00 + GBP 5.00 P&P.
- For the Rest Of The World GBP 45.00 + GBP 7.00 P&P.
This should be quite a saving on the imported prices of the set. If you want to pay in
US Dollars ($) you can, but ONLY in cash by REGISTERED MAIL. The total $ price is
No $ checks (cheques) or eurocheques can be accepted. I cannot cash foreign cheques nor
any foreign currencies except US Dollars, sorry, but these all carry a hefty charge of
around GBP 6.00 per transaction. However, American Express Travellers Cheques (not Visa or
any other) are okay in GBP (Pounds Sterling) ONLY. These are available at all good travel
agents and banks. Sign them top and bottom and put David Clayton on the middle
line. Send them by REGISTERED POST ONLY to ensure safe delivery. You can also send
International Postal Orders in GBP (Pounds Sterling). Work out which is the best or
cheapest for you and use that method. Dollar cash is the most obvious for those of you in
the USA and is likely to be the cheapest and the least hassle.
All sets will be mailed on the day of release or just before if I can get them earlier.
Please get your money in as soon as possible. I need to get the FAS order in by May 4th.
All cheques and POs should be made payable to David Clayton. Send your order

Okay, that's it. I'd just like to add that if your a Free fan, you are going to LOVE
this set. Before it arrives make sure you have: good beer, good liquer, good chocolate or
whatever your personal passion. All three sound pretty good, actually. The FREE
APPRECIATION SOCIETY Magazine, Issue 86, has comprehensive track details and comments.

FEAST THOSE EYES
Finally, the news you've been waiting for. The set will feature 5 CDs, all 24 bit
remastered from the original master tapes by Peter Mew at Abbey Road. The box will come
with a 60 page booklet which is being designed by Phil Smee. The set will include a new
essay by Phil Sutcliffe and a full sessionology by some bloke called David Clayton.
Everything is looking good and sounding fantastic. This is the finalised listing.
The material is a combination of unissued mixes / alternative masters and new 1999
Richard Digby Smith mixes. Some material on this set has actually never been mixed before
so it was necessary to have someone in to help. Diga, having worked with Free throughout
most of their career, was the obvious choice and has done a fantastic job. Everything
The set as proposed here is around 99% unreleased and features many new tracks, also
the new mixes almost exclusively feature alternative vocals, alternative or extra guitar
tracks and so forth. The live material has been remixed and due to new advances in
recording technology we've been able to rescue material the band couldn't use for Free
Live! due to electrical crackles and various anomalies.
The material for disc 5 encompasses all the related bands and will be included in a
specially designed tape box pouch. This will include unreleased material from Peace, Paul
Rodgers and Rabbit along with rare material from Sharks and alternative KKTR tracks. Also
included for the first time is the complete version of TIME AWAY, over 18 minutes of it.
Andy Fraser refused to allow the release of any Toby or Fraser/Miller Band material. Any
complaints should be relayed to him and not me.
